DID YOU KNOW…

The Dene are thought to have followed caribou herds into the Northwest Territories over 7000 years ago. Most parts of the caribou were used: flesh, marrow, sinew for thread, hide for clothing, antlers for bows and tools, tallow for lamp light, fat, blood, and the contents of the stomach and intestine. They considered the caribou an important animal and hunting continued to be important for nutrition as well as maintaining a certain level of social ties.
